I now have a psychiatric advance directive of my very own, fully executed and totally legal.  I no longer have to worry about whether or not my wishes will be communicated in the event I am hospitalized or so out of it I don’t make sense (or realize I need to be communicating those wishes.)  Stuff like “don’t send me to the scary psych hospital south of town” and “NO, DO NOT GIVE ME ECT” is now in writing; in theory this stuff will only be ignored if it’s really, really necessary.  And they can’t just say one part is bad and so the whole thing can be thrown out.

I still have to send out copies (one to each of my treatment providers, plus one to each of my “agents,”) and scan it for safekeeping.  But the hard part is done.

(I also have a power of attorney, such that my rent can now be paid if I’m in the hospital and incapable of making such decisions.)
