They’re totally not obligated to say the things you want to hear, the things you agree with, the things you already know, etc.
They are obligated to tell you what God wants them to tell you, including specifically calling you (and everyone else) to repentance (which pretty much always involves saying something that the listener doesn’t want to hear.)
If you find yourself really upset with a prophet, or seriously questioning what he says, you really had better double-check your belief in his divine calling and your understanding of what priesthood authority is, because seriously, his job is not to keep you from being upset.
I get why my dad, a total non-member who doesn’t believe in God, prophets, authority, divine commands, etc., has a problem with all kinds of things that are said in general conference. But those of us who’ve made eternal covenants… we have a lot more work to do before we can justifiably reject what the people who we have sustained as prophets tell us.
A post-General-Conference show. Like a post-game show for football/basketball/etc., but for General Conference.
I mean, yes, we have the wrap-ups and such on Deseret News and Mormon Newsroom, but it’d be awesome to have a TV version. They could, like, point out the scriptures cited, and give biographical information about the speakers, and… I don’t know, compare the word frequencies for this conference versus last conference. Stuff like that.
It would be awesome, is what I’m saying.
This is the reason that I didn’t see that fly.
(It’s also why I haven’t been continually distracted by random thoughts and sudden urges to research things. That picture took most of three entire sessions, BTW.)
I’m putting them all in my Living Prophets Speak Today queue - I’m going to try to set it up so that it posts two per day till the next conference, but of course that means that I’m setting it up on the theory that Tumblr will actually work the way it’s supposed to.
So anyway, hopefully your posts will be reblogged… at some point… more or less like two a day… ish.
This official website does not offer a comprehensive explanation of everything related to same-sex attraction, but it does reflect the feelings of senior leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as to how we should treat each other as part of the human family. The site offers a place where people whose lives are impacted by attraction to the same sex can find inspiration to work through difficult challenges while remaining faithful to Church teachings.
For folks who had trouble with the, for lack of a better description, “gay stuff” in Elder Oaks’ talk - please check out this site, and try to wait and read the transcript later this week before making judgments or coming to conclusions about what he said.
The temptation to hear things that weren’t actually said is strong with any topic you feel deeply about.
You totally have my sympathy, empathy, understanding, compassion, etc. I recommend praying to be able to wake up and concentrate enough to get something out of the morning session.
(Night football games are nice in that they don’t conflict scheduling-wise with the general sessions; they are not nice in that they constitute a major temptation to stay up till midnight and eat foods that are likely to give you stomach trouble especially when the game is super-tense. I’m told that the way I feel after this kind of night is just like a hangover, so… But praying totally helped, and I recommend it highly.)
Because the team at LDS.org is exactly that awesome.
